TIFTON — Southern Bodies, Tiftarea YMCA, J&J Elite Physiques, Powerhouse and the Tift County Recreation Department are hosting the fourth annual Fitness Challenge at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Tift County Recreation Department, 401 Victory Drive North. The event is sponsored in-kind by Tift Regional Medical Center. Registration is from 7-8 a.m. The fitness challenge will begin at 8 a.m. Adults and children may participate in the event, and the registration fee for adults is $30 and $5 for children. The age categories for adults are 16-25, 26-35, 36-44, 45-50 and 51 & older. The children at the event will participate in a "Kids Obstacle Course." The age categories for this are 8-11, 12-13 and 14-15. Gabriel Reese, who is the coordinator of the event, said he started the fitness challenge to bring local gyms together, get more people involved in working out after the holidays and to distribute money to charities for use in Tift County. Reese said the fitness challenge consists of a course of nine different exercises which includes a bench hop, sit-ups, one-mile stationary bike ride, doggy drag, crab walk, rows, box step-ups, bench press and a half-mile run. The top overall male and female from each group will be determined as the winners based on the best time. Reese said first and second-place winners will be awarded a cash prize. Also, first- place winners will receive a trophy and medallions will be given to second-place winners. Reese said there will be judges walking around timing participants as they go through the course. He said that the children are expected to have fun and that he plans on giving them something for participating. “We’re trying to get the whole community involved,” Reese said. Reese said last year’s proceeds benefited Tifton’s Easter Seals Day Camp. this year all proceeds will benefit breast cancer for treatment and supplies.
