How do I get started being a personal trainer?

Im about to graduate college and want to be a personal trainer. Ive been working out for about 6 years so I know my way around the gym really well, but have no experience training other than helping my friends out. would gyms hire me with that? do people usually work their way up to become a personal trainer or is there a test i need to take? any help would be appreciated. also, on average, how much does a personal trainer whose an employee at a gym make?

I'm currently a full time personal trainer, all I can tell you is I had it really easy since I have a masters in kinesiology. Gym's will have a much easier time accepting people with such a degree. but technically it is not required, you'll just have to be real lucky getting accepted.
I used to be a personal trainer at a gym, and got paid $3200 a month after taxes, right now I have my ads everywhere including the gym I used to work at, and people just come to me, the payment is very inconsistent, at the end of the month, I may make as much as up to $6000, sometimes as little as $1000, in the end it adds up and is about the same, I recommend working at a gym though, especially if your starting fresh, you have easy access to equipment, and you kind of have your own community to go to for questions as a beginner.

As far as taking a test, for my gym, there is a test. I don't know what they ask, because like I said I was interviewed, they glanced at my resume, and saw my masters, and that was really it.
