What qualifications should I look for in a personal trainer?
I am looking into getting a personal trainer at my gym, but I know that a lot of them have very little training aside form a few courses. I don't want to insult anyone, but I don't feel that a six month course and a multiple choice test is really good enough. do you know what questions I should ask to ensure that I get a well qualified trainer? What types of certificates are available to trainers and what do they have to do get them? Thanks!
This is a GREAT question and I wish more people thought this way!
I have attached an article in the source section that you can check out.
There are many factors to consider when choosing your trainer.
Relevant formal education background is important and a nationally recognized certification is also a good indicator.
One of the most important things you can ask is to see proof (in the form of testimonials or before and after pics) of clients that this particular trainer has helped in the past.
Passion also goes along way in helping people reach their goals.
I have trainers on staff that dont have a formal education or a top notch certification but with our guidance and their passion the are GREAT trainer.
Most trainers will also give you a trial session. Use this to further screen your trainer to make sure he/she is exactly what you are looking for.
you are right about those gym trainers! plus those guys have to use plans approved by the gyms who have to safe guard themselves legally which hampers their ability to give the best advice.
my friend is one, with all his certifications but guess who he calls for answers. yours truly. and i don't have any certifications. just results. because i've spent the time researching and experimenting and losing the fat myself.
if what you need help with is a diet plan, i'd hire an online trainer. the key is knowing when to make necessary changes to that plan too.
they are extremely cheap for what they provide you.
good luck!
