LEOMINSTER — Gerard Boniello never intended to own a gym, let alone two, but he recently celebrated the opening of the second Option 1 Fitness on new Lancaster Road.

Boniello, 42, has an extensive background in private and government security and a lifelong passion for fitness and training, and he opened his first 24-hour gym, Center Street Fitness in Townsend, two years ago, as a way to share his interest with others.

When the opportunity came up to build the company with a second location in Leominster, Boniello said he jumped on it, changing the name of Option 1 Fitness, and expanding the services to offer a new program in its Extreme Training Center, a high-intensity functional workout program.

“We gutted the whole space and rebuilt it with state-of-the-art equipment,” Boniello said of his new gym. “We pride ourselves on having an impeccably clean facility and 24-hour access for our members.”

All of the equipment used in Option 1 is made by Star Trac and includes high-end technology, Boniello said. he pointed out two stationary bike machines, one of which has video spin classes for users of all levels. The other is an interactive program that allows users to “race” others logged into the machine — even if they’re at another gym with the same technology — and the resistance level changes automatically depending on the terrain in a video console on the machine.

It’s rewarding to see someone hit their fitness goals, or even to see their health improve after a few weeks of regular training, Boniello said.

“We’re so passionate about what we’re doing because we’re changing people’s lives,” he said.

The gyms are staffed by personal trainers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, but members have key-card access around the clock. Boniello said he’s installed a high-tech security system that keeps key-card-holding members safe, including portable “emergency buttons” that members can hold if they’re uncomfortable working out during off hours or have medical concerns that could result in emergencies.
