It's survival of the fittest
HIS muscles toned from hours of painstaking training, Jason Williams is among the city’s fitness elite who will vie for the title of Ipswich’s fittest person tomorrow.
the fitness challenge will be held at CrossFit at 13 Turley Street.
CrossFit Ipswich co-owner and head trainer Shaune Irving said 65 people had registered for the challenge, which was structured into heats of eight across two workouts.
“the challenge gathers like-minded people to test their levels of strength and fitness in a fun environment,” mr Irving said.
he said participants were deliberately kept in the dark and not informed what the challenge would entail.
“CrossFit members train for the unknown and prepare for any event,” mr Irving said.
“My clients don’t know what workout they will be doing when they turn up, they just turn up and do it.”
Starting his gym under his Ipswich house, mr Irving said CrossFit had moved to its current location in June and now averaged five new clients a week.
Based in a commercial precinct near the Ipswich Cemetery, he said the facility’s basic layout reflected its serious intentions.
“We have broken away from the commercial generalities of TVs and mirrors,” mr Irving said.
“the gym inside looks pretty raw.
“People come here to train, train hard and go home.
“It is for people serious about weight loss and personal wellbeing.”
mr Williams, who has been training with mr Irving for close to a year, said CrossFit’s core strength and conditioning program had helped him lose 29kg.
he said take-away food and “loads of iced coffee and Coke” combined with long periods of inactivity driving trucks had led to his weight gain.
Once a packet-a-day smoker, with poor fitness levels, he said he had turned his life around and was now able to lift 100kg clean and jerk.
Registration is from 7.15am tomorrow, with the first heats from 8.45am.
